About French:French is the original international language of the modern world. For centuries, it was the language of the European aristocracy, and remains a popular diplomatic language. It is an administrative language of several European countries as well as Canada, a large portion of the African continent, and many smaller countries across the globe. The student who has mastered French as well as English truly has a key to communicating with the world.Teacher Introduction:Nathan Risley is a certified French and German teacher in both Washington State and Ohio. He has a bachelor’s degree from Miami University in Ohio (major in French with a minor in German), a master’s degree in secondary education from Xavier University in Ohio and has also studied at the Université de Caen in France and at the Universität Trier in Germany. He has 19 years’ experience teaching French and German in the United States, and 3 years’ experience teaching ELL at 金苹果双语学校 in Shanghai.Course Summary: To begin a journey towards the total mastery of a language, building strong oral and written foundations is essential. In this course, students will establish skills in grammar and practice pronunciation through conversational exercises. In addition, cultural elements from various French-speaking countries will be studied, because knowing culture is an important element of understanding the spirit of the language.

Course Content

The main objective of this course is to build a foundation upon which students may continue more advanced studies of the French language.

Week 1 objectives:

- Understand and exchange common greetings

- Pronounce unique French sounds

- State name, age, likes, and dislikes

Week 2 objectives:

- Recite the French alphabet and recognize letters

- Ask/answer basic conversational questions

- Recite and understand days of the week and months of the year

- Count to 20

Week 3 objectives:

- Understand and say the time of day

- Recite and write French accent marks

- Describe self with basic adjectives

- Count to 69

Week 4 objectives:

- Understand and use weather expressions

- Understand, say, and write 11 basic colors

- Count to 100

Week 5 objectives:

- Identify and understand names of classroom objects and people

- Use subject pronouns with the verb être (to be)

- Describe other people with basic adjectives

- Count to 1 000 000 000 (easier than counting to 100!)

Week 6 objectives:

- Describe what self and others possess with the verb avoir (to have)

- Signify possession with possessive adjectives

- Describe self and others with idioms using the verb avoir

Week 7 objectives:

- State destinations with the verb aller (to go)

- Understand and recite destinations such as places in town, regions, and countries

Week 8 objectives:

- Write and pronounce regular French verbs correctly in the present tense

- Use the present tense to describe a large variety of action
